First, the model this whole page runs on. How do you make the skin surface smoother?
Chemical exfoliation now, a retinoid for the long game. Both are research-backed: 12 percent lactic acid produced clinically graded improvement in skin smoothness over 3 months [2], and topical retinoids have decades of trial evidence for texture and photodamaged skin [3].
Smoothness is the optics component of glow. A surface of flat, evenly shed skin cells reflects light in a coherent way; a surface of clinging dead cells and rough patches scatters it. - SPF 30 or higher, every morning, on the face, regardless of weather or season. Discretionary use, meaning only on obviously sunny days, was the comparison group that did worse [4].
- Targeted brighteners are secondary. Ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, and azelaic acid have supportive but smaller-scale evidence for pigment, and none of them keeps up with the damage unprotected UV exposure adds back. SPF first, actives on top if desired.
- Existing dark patches are a dermatologist conversation, especially new, changing, or asymmetric ones. Pigment that changes shape or color is a medical question, not a glow question.
Does boosting circulation actually make skin glow?
Somewhat, briefly, and this is the component with the thinnest evidence. Blood flow contributes the warm, alive quality of glowing skin, but tools sold to boost it, from gua sha to facial massage, are mixed evidence at best, and the flush from exercise is real but transient.

What has weak or no evidence for glow?
Extra water for people who are not dehydrated, anything labeled detox, collagen supplements for glow specifically, and the idea that price predicts results. This is the section most glow content will not write, which is exactly why it is here.
- Drinking more water, if you are already hydrated. The actual literature is thinner than the advice suggests. One small study of 49 women found that adding about 2 liters of water daily for a month measurably improved skin hydration mainly in those whose baseline intake was low [5]. That is the honest shape of the evidence: correcting genuinely low intake helps; stacking liters on top of normal intake has no good evidence of adding glow. Water is not a topical humectant you swallow.

Lifestyle claims deserve the same component-by-component honesty as products:
- Sleep research-backed, within limits. Is glass skin the same as glowing skin?
Related but not identical. Glass skin is a specific K-beauty aesthetic: an intensely hydrated, poreless-looking, almost wet finish, typically built with layered hydrating products.
